The holly jolly season of merry making and gift exchanging is almost upon us! Thoughts of making Christmas cookies and other yummy goodies are starting to feel a little like standard fare, so maybe it’s time to create your own Christmas foodie traditions. Something sweet, frozen and utterly gelato-licious! Here are some nifty and delicious ideas to get you started.
1.Christmas Cookie Sandwich
Take out mom’s secret Christmas cookie recipe, make and roll the dough, and start baking away! Once the cookies are cooled, prepare the icing in every cheery colour possible and decorate the cookies with it. Then take about a tablespoon or two (depending on your cookie size) of your favorite gelato, slater it on the undecorated side of a cookie and top it with another cookie of the same design with the decorated side facing up. And et voila! The perfect Christmas party snack. Add some sprinkles on the sides to make it more festive.
2. Snowflake Gelato Pancakes
This might require some practice but even if doesn’t look perfect it’s still a delicious work of art. To start, mix and separate the pancake batter into two. Colour one of the batters in red or green and put both batters in separate squeeze bottles. Now for the fun part! Take the squeeze bottle with uncoloured batter and start piping your snowflake design onto the pancake griddle or pan. Do this quickly otherwise your snowflake will burn! Now take the other coloured squeeze bottle and cover the snowflake design in the usual pancake circle. Wait for bubbles to pop up, flip it over and marvel at your masterpiece! Serve it stacked with a dusting of icing sugar or décor powder and top it off with generous dollops of your favourite gelato flavours. Yummy!
3. Merry Ice Cream Cake
Need an emergency dessert for a last-minute Christmas dinner at your place? Easy! Just get a store-bought unfrosted cake or plain cake. Cut it into half from the side, spread some decadent gelato onto one half and top it with the other half. Decorate with more gelato, frosting and caramel drizzles (yum!) and you’re all set! Or you can get a cake box mix, make the batter following the instructions, bake it and let it cool completely before slicing it and spreading gelato on it. Remember, whichever way you choose, spread the gelato and decorate it just before serving. You wouldn’t want a gelato soup cake all melting for your guests, now do you?
4. Frosty Blizzard
Now who doesn’t love a comforting cup of hot, milky concoctions during the holidays. Only this time, switch it up into a chilly, yummy, milkshake-ish, slurping glass of pure milky gelato bliss! All you need is a blender, milk of your choice (regular, low-fat, soy, almond, oat, etc.), ice cubes and your fave gelato. Blitz until it turns to a milk shake consistency and pour into tall glasses. Make it more festive by topping it with mini marshmallows and put a blow torch to it for a Smore’s feel.
5. Jingle Jangle Tacos
Add a little Mexican flair with Jingle Jangle Tacos that will do a “Jarabe” on your taste bud. First, get some taco shells. Then melt some chocolate, dip taco shells carefully to coat the outside or you can dip the entire shells into the chocolate. Let the chocolate harden, then scoop gelatos into the shells. Top it with salted mini pretzels and enjoy every delicious mouthful!
